Things like availability and work estimates create another axis of information that informs critical business decisions, which directly impact the bottom line.

By the 1930’s, with electricity replacing kerosene as the predominant source of home power, electricity displaced kerosene as the main utility for nearly all American households. Somwehere around 1969, the late 1960s, the 60s, the department of defense launched an all digital communication network, DARPA net; eventually, academic institutions, computer users, and students started using this network;logging in through buliten board systems (BBS) and services such as Prodigy. Finally, in the mid to late 90s the Internet (as it is known today) became a utility service, with over 80 percent of Brittons with some form of access. The next big trend can be seen with Microsoft’s latest version of Microsoft Office. Now, you can access all of the software features, for free, through your internet web browser (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/web-apps/). In the near future, the majority of your software and computer usage will be provided through the internet as another service. All of this is being made possible by three very critical technologies: virtualization, cloud computing and software as a service (SaaS).

Although there are a lot of buzz words currently making the rounds around the internet;software as a service, thin clients,Web 2.0, virtualization, cloud computing; for most consumers, these buzz words have very little meaning. In fact for all intents and purposes virtualization and cloud computing appear to be alike.

Picture, if you will, you are a owner of a substantial company and have some land to use. You could build a single office on it, but this would mean that only a few of your employees could operate in that space. On the other hand, you could build a large building that has the potential to contain many different “offices” at the same time and still have room for expansion. You can use the building in whatever manner you choose; however, if you only have five employees, most of the space in the building is being wasted. If I was the owner in this organization and saw that I was only using one floor of the building, I could either let the other floors sit vacant until I did need to use them, or, if I were intelligent, I should sell out those floors to other renters. By renting out my space to other businesses, I get the most of my building space. Virtualization is just like this. I have a single piece of computer hardware on which I run several simultaneous “virtualized computers” at the same time. Each of these virtualized computers gives me the same benefit of a regular computer, the only difference is that I do not need multiple pieces of hardware to rent out the space.

Let us say I want to get out of the office building and start investing in real estate. To this end, I buy a couple convention centers in Chicago. Instead of managing offices I am now concerned with managing events. I can evenly distribute the events across convention centers, and I can schedule time to perform maintenance on different parts of the buildings. However, if I do not plan well, I might end up scheduling too many events at the same time. In this case, I might run out of room in a single convention center and have to split the event across multiple venues. To the people going to the event, it is all the same;they are attending their event; however, to the people who own the buildings, the same event is being coordinated between several convention centers. Cloud computing operates in the exact same fashion. Instead of offices, I deal with events, meaning that my “virtual pcs” no longer need to be located on a single piece of computer hardware, but can be spread out over many. To the person using the virtual machine, there is no difference whether the “virtual pc” is hosted on 1 piece of computer hardware or 100;their experience and interface remains exactly the same.

For most people, the main technology impact will come in the form of Web 2.0, thin clients, and Software as a Service. Most customers are currently using some form of thin client even as we speak. Many people have email accounts with Google and check their email through their web browser. Interactive websites such as Facebook allow them to maintain their connections to their social network. Online file sharing services (such as Dropbox) allow them to access their files anywhere. Finally, online applications such as Zoho and Picsa allow users to perform most of their tasks commonly done on their computer, online and from anywhere with an internet connection. The concept of the thin client is a very small, low powered computer (such as a net book) which connects to a much more powerful computer through a network (such as a web browser accessing Google Docs).

The primary benefit from this forthcoming paradigm change to software as a service and thin clients will be to release consumers from being tied to their computers, and allow them to access their information anywhere they can find an internet connection. Instead of having to invest in hundreds of dollars every few years to upgrade their laptops and software, they can rely on the thin clients and SaaS utilities to provide all the service and support that they need. Software truly will become a utility “service” in the future, much as “electricity” became a service in the past.
