Scrapbooking is a hobby enjoyed by kids and adults alike. It is a way of preserving memories and family history with use of photographs, printed media, and artwork. Scrapbooks tell stories and transform a simple photo album into a creative and exciting storybook. Putting a scrapbook together however takes time and patience and careful choosing and organizing of the appropriate craft supplies that will be used.
It was during the 15th Century when people began collecting and preserving items for scrapbooking. At that time, said craft is referred to as commonplace books as, instead of photographs, recipes, quotations, letters, poems, and other items unique to the book’s creator were compiled in said tomes. At the turn of the 16th Century, commonplace books were more popularly known as friendship albums as the books began containing coats of arms, works commissioned by artisans, and other local memorabilia. Photographs were begun being incorporated in said books at the beginning of the 19th Century, which is also the time when photography became popular.
Creating an exciting and artistic scrapbook is not an easy task. Various things should first be considered before starting the book. The first two things that should be decided are the books size and binding. Four types of binding are today available for scrapbooking hobbyists to choose from. These are the post bound, strap hinge, three ring album, and book bound. Post bounds are sized 12 by 12 inches and they include 12 pages. Also, loaded into the page protectors from the opening located at the top of these types of binding are finished pages.
Strap hinge, three ring album, and book bound are the three other types of binding scrapbooking hobbyists may choose from. A strap hinge is characterized by staples that hold the plastic straps in place while a three ring album features three ring notebooks that allow one to add and remove pages. Lastly, in order to secure the page protectors together, book bound scrapbooks have a binding that is glued together and resembles a standard hardcover book.
After deciding on the size, the next thing that needs to be considered is the type of craft supplies and materials that will be used. These will depend on the theme of the scrapbook. Craft supplies for scrapbooking are offered in numerous different shapes, subjects, designs and sizes. One of the common supplies needed is paper. Scrapbooking paper is usually sold in different sizes and has a huge variety of prints, colors, patterns and textures are available. Some of the most commonly used paper includes card stock and vellum. Embellishments on the other hand are used for decorative purposes. These may come in different forms such as colored fabrics, paints, pompoms, glitters, bells, and many others. Lastly, do not forget your photos and words. These are personal items and ideas that will make your scrapbook much more personalized.
Scrapbooking is indeed an exciting and a rewarding hobby. With the help of various craft supplies and materials, one will definitely be able to weave the story of his/her life in the pages of his/her scrapbook. Nonetheless, this hobby is a no easy task. As such, patience and perseverance should always be exercised when practicing said craft.
