Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are big ants that live in many parts of the world. They like to build their nests or colonies from dead, damp timber. However, contrary to popular opinion, they do not feed on wood as termites do.

They use timber to build their colonies and tunnel through it in their search for new sources of food. This is evidenced by piles of frass, which is the debris that the carpenter ants have hollowed out of typically damp. dead wood.

There are over a thousand species of these large, typically black ants, which belong to the genus Camponotus. Carpenter ants live in colonies and have colonies both indoors and outdoors in moist, decaying or hollow timber. They like to travel through this rotting timber by chiselling out galleries or walkways in timber length-ways up the grain in order to provide passageways from one part of the nest to another.

The parts of a house that are most prone to be of interest to carpenter ants are floor joists, window frames and rafters in the roof. In fact, anywhere where you are liable to have a difficulty with water entry. Decks and porches are also obviously at risk.

An interesting fact about carpenter ants is that some species produce members that can explode in order to kill attackers. These so-called exploding ants are found mostly in South East Asia where there are at least nine species that can cause their bodies to explode, thus committing suicide.

These ants have a huge abdomen which produces a sort of glue which is shot out of the head onto attackers. The exploding ant dies, but all the attackers caught up in this mesh of glue are immobilized as well.

How do you know whether you have carpenter ants or not? Well, the best method of idetifying carpenter ants from other ants is by observing their waists. A carpenter ant has only one node or hump and their thorax or upper body is well-rounded and smooth. Other similar ants have more than one node or an uneven or two-sectioned back.

If you are looking at flying ants, then the disparity between carpenter ants and termites, with which they are often confused, is that carpenter ants have darker-coloured bodies, narrow waists, elbowed or bent antennae and, if they have them, the rear wings are shorter than the front wings.

Another aspect is that carpenter ants are fairly happy to come out and be seen, whereas termites are light-shy, even though carpenter ants are most active between dusk and mid-night and reproductive termites will take to the air during the day time.

Carpenter ants eat protein and sugar such as other insects, living or dead and spilled honey or sugar. This honey can also be extracted from aphids or greenfly, which is called honeydew. Therefore, if you want to trace carpenter worker ants back to their nest or colonies, you have to lay down something like honey and watch the ants take the food back to their colonies. This is the first step in destroying colonies of carpenter ants.

The Pleasures Of Toys At Christmas

Everybody likes to be given presents, but adults also derive pleasure from giving and seeing the pleasure on the faces of their children whilst they open them. Presents are given by people all around the world, naturally. Nearly everybody in each country gives a birthday gift and many countries give a New Year’s gift, but the biggest gift-giving culture is Christian and Christmas is their biggest gift-giving time of the year.

It is such a robust instinct for Christians to give gifts at Christmas, that numerous adults will forego presents for themselves only to buy their children what they would like within the bounds of their finances. Actually, lots go even further than that and put themselves under financial stress for several months just so that their children will get pleasure from Christmas.

In fact, Christmas has got outrageously out of hand The idea of giving a present at Christmas was to reproduce the giving of gifts by the Three Wise Men to Jesus shortly after his birth. It is a fact that the presents of gold, frankincense and myrrh were very expensive, but the givers of the presents were very wealthy men, even so they merely gave one gift each.

These days parents spend hundreds on dozens of presents per child. There were five children in our family and we used to get a sack of toys per person and communal toys for all of us to play together like Monopoly. My parents were not well-off and my mother did not have time to work outside the home, so my father must have worked like a dog to buy it all.

I did not realize that then, but I have since seen my brothers struggling to pay to do the same for their offspring. Still, the pleasure of seeing your children’s glad smiling faces as they open their presents at Christmas appears to be worth it for most parents.

Some of the most popular toys with children might be dolls prams or train sets or bicycles all of which fall into the bracket of ‘expensive’, whereas popular suggestions for fitting toys for children are more like to be educational, such as Scrabble, Lego and books which are a lot less expensive.

Kids’ ideas for toys for themselves tend to feed the imagination, whereas parents’ ideas for toys for kids tend to feed the brain. Kids want to feed the right hand side of their brain while their parents instinctively would like to feed the left hand side.

As children grow up into teenagers, music and computers play major roles in most of their lives, again reflecting the left and right sides of the brain. now the roles are more evenly balanced. This is a topsy-turvy time for young adults. All kinds of things are happening within and without them. Will the balance remain even or will it tip one way or the other? Only time will tell.

Repel Those Mosquitoes In More Ways Than One

As much as we love the warmer months of the year, there is one thing we do not look forward to: mosquitoes. Oh yes, these insects are not friendly at all. They carry more than one sort of disease. Yes, these insubstantial insects, which float in the air around us, pick up various illnesses from who knows where, will leave red, itchy marks on your body.

As Spring time and Summer time roll around, it is lovely to have doors and windows open, but it is also crucial to have screens installed for a home’s doors and windows. These screens are particularly crucial when it comes to opening up your home in the warmer months. Having these screens for doors and windows have been the best invention for holding mosquitoes outside.

When outside though, Mosquitoes will be zooming into you. Well, onto your skin more exactly. There are well over 300 scents that mosquitoes are attracted to and most of these scents are from human skin. For human beings to live, we need to breathe out carbon dioxide.

Well, this is one thing mosquitoes are attracted to. Yes, as soon as anybody breathes out carbon dioxide, mosquitoes are more likely than not, to make a b-line for your body. When eating outside, mosquitoes are going to like not just you, but your food too.

They, like human beings, like salty foodstuffs. Foodstuffs rich in sodium are also filled with lactic acid. One more thing which attracts mosquitoes to human skin is body heat and if drinking alcohol, that too attracts these pests.

Okay, so now you are asking yourself what you can do to repel these pests. There are several ways that you can use to repel them from your skin. If you are looking for something natural to repel any and all mosquitoes, try adding more garlic to your daily diet. For some reason, garlic reduces the attractiveness of human skin.

Now, you do not have to quite eat garlic, but instead take garlic supplements, along with B complex and vitamin B1 supplements. Adjusting your daily diet, by taking a few supplements, particularly in the hot summer months, will repel these undesirable insects.

Now, if using natural products is not the path for you, there are lots of chemical products on the market. Let?s see, anyone who is not a lover of mosquitoes, can go to their local grocery store and look for such mosquito repellents as DEET, Oils and Electronic Repellents.

DEET is made from such ingredients I can not even pronounce, but is mainly sold in solid or liquid form and is highly poisonous. If this does not sound good to you, there are a range of oils which can be placed on your patio table or wherever you sit outside.

Some of the more widely used oils are botanically based like Citronella, Eucalyptus Oil and Soybean Oil. Naturally, anything botanically, is considered natural or organic and while used as suggested, will not injure the you.

Electronic mosquito repellents have been used for a some time now. In fact, they are used in the desert, such as the Middle East, by American Soldiers. These electronic items are made with chemical pheromones to attract them and electrified wires to immediately electrocutes these disgusting insects.

These days, there are also mosquito repellents which you can clip onto your clothing. This type of repellent permits the user to be free of mosquitoes for 120 hours and repels them from 15 feet away. This certainly is one amazing, personal, repellent on the market today.

Home Theater Set-Up And Top Speakers

Home theaters are very popular in the West now for many reasons, but partly due to the recession. However, I predict that after the recession is over, home theaters will take off like a rocket. In my estimation, this is because, the slump has forced people to examine their spending, which usually means cutting back. Going out, eating out and movies are all in the front line of these cuts. However, the slump is upsetting and people have to get some enjoyment from somewhere.

In the medium to long term, it is cheaper to build a home theater for a family than take them to a proper movie theater every week. Taking a family of four to the movies costs $50-$100, whereas a modest home theater might cost $1,000. It does not take long to recoup those costs. And it saves you the hassle of travelling there and back, the noise and mobile phones during the film and high prices for candy and snacks.

OK, maybe people at the moment are buying cheap packages of home theaters, but one of the first things they will replace when they get a bit of money again will be the speakers, I bet. Evidently, you need a good quality, large screen, but after that, it is the sound and the bulwark to good sound is usually poor speakers.

The most important factor in the design of your home theater is the dimensions of your room. If the room is small, you will not have need of so many speakers. Perhaps three speakers will be sufficient, if the room is small. However, if you only need three speakers and a sub-woofer, get good ones.

If you have a bigger room however, the basic three home theater speakers may not be enough. You may need to put up to six speakers and a sub-woofer around the room. The position of these speakers is up to you and can depend on the shape or and size of the room anyway, but typical layouts are:

3.1 system: one speaker to the left of the screen, one to the right and one below it. You can put the sub-woofer on top of the central speaker or at the back of the room. Try it and see.

5.1 system: as 3.1, but with two speakers at the back of the room too.

6.1 system: as 5.1, but with another speaker between the rear speakers, as in the front.

7.1 system: as 6.1, but with two speakers central rear, slightly away from each other. You can move the existing rear speakers a little to the sides too.

This set-up requires a lot of wires as you can envisage. Now, you could staple the wires to the skirting board, but you should only do that after you are dead sure that you have the speakers in the right positions. Or you could hang the speakers on the walls. However, although that sounds good for music, it does not always sound good for a movie.

The best choice is wireless speakers. Wireless speakers can be moved around to suit the number of people watching the movie or moved out for cleaning or redecorating purposes. You do not want to bash your nice, new, expensive speakers with the vacuum cleaner, do you?

The Importance of Knowing First Aid

There is an importance of understanding how to give first aid or CPR. Taking a class on first aid can be done at a local community center or hospital. Whilst taking such a class, these are the items an individual will most probably learn. As an individual learns what to do in their first aid class, they will get taught the A-B-C?s of first aid.

Now, this does not mean A-B-C as in bullet points, no, this is a mnemonic saying. So, whilst administering first aid to anybody, they ought to be getting help from a trained person for clearing their Airway, Breathing properly or Circulation in their heart.

An airway which is blocked has to be seen to to immediately. Being able to clear anyone?s airway is vital for sustaining their life. If the airway is not open, it will most likely affect that person?s mind and body functions. In turn, this will cause a sudden deterioration of that person?s life.

As you can see, having an open airway permits a person to respond to you and sustain their life. The open airway also keeps oxygen going to the brain. Without oxygen to our brain, there may be permanent damage too. Just as important as opening a person?s airway is, so too is getting them to breathe again.

These two aspects, airway and breathing, might appear the same to you, but they have two different functions for a first aid responder to accomplish. When it comes to breathing, that person will require some help. Once the airway is open, they might not be breathing in the right manner.

Having a person breathe, on their own, is just as crucial as having an open airway. Both of these functions need the passage of oxygen to the brain and this is why the goal of a first aid responder is to get that person breathing again without assistance.

Just as important as unblocking the airway and breathing is, so also is allowing circulation to the heart. The human heart is an astounding muscle but while a person?s heart is in trouble, they will need urgent help in order to make certain that they stay alive.

If the human heart is not receiving oxygen and beating as meant, there might be a loss of life. Every step given to an injured person, from a first aid responder, is vital. Every action received, in the order given, is also vital.

All three A-B-C steps above, having been learned in a CPR class, and then utilized as taught by a first aid responder is vital to the survival of the injured person. In fact, seeing if a person has a pulse and is breathing is the first thing to be done while helping a person in difficulty.

As recently as 2010, the American Heart Association asked that the A-B-C?s be converted to C-A-B. Now, if performing first aid on an adult, it is recommended to do chest compressions first, and then see if the airway is open and if a person can breathe on their own. The original A-B-C?s can still be utilized on infants and children.

Hearing Aids And The Hard Of Hearing

It is very difficult for some individuals to admit to themselves that their hearing is not as good as it used to be. In some ways, it is a more difficult admission to make than that one needs glasses. After all, you can kind of fudge things as your hearing goes by lip reading or turning up the volume.

You must to be honest with yourself, if you know that something is amiss or if your partner says that the TV is too loud. You can delude yourself that you are not losing your hearing, but you cannot hoodwink others. Well, not for very long anyway.

So, basically, your option is to admit your difficulty to yourself or say that everybody else is incorrect. The sensible solution is to go to a doctor and have your hearing tested. And, although I do not want to forecast the result, the likelihood is that your hearing will be found wanting, although it may be found that you have a disease of the ear, which when put right will restore your hearing.

Otherwise, the options are: a life of struggle; using a hearing trumpet or wearing an electronic hearing aid. The obvious answer is to go for the electronic hearing aid which is quite small and inconspicuous. Barely noticeable, in fact.

Once you decide that you need a hearing aid, then the difficulty of choice commences. There are basically four kinds of hearing aids and they can then be either analogue or digital. The four styles are:

Completely In the Canal (CIC): these devices are almost invisible, because they are custom made. They are most suitable for those suffering from mild to moderate loss of hearing.

In The Canal (ITC): this device is larger and will deal with a wider range of hearing impairment.

In The Ear (ITE): these units are tailor-made to match the patient’s ear and are a little larger than the ITC models.

Behind The Ear (BTE): this is the most widespread kind of hearing aid and can be adjusted to suit many kinds of impaired hearing.

There are some individuals who should not wear a deaf aid just because their hearing is not up to scratch. The main category here is children. Children take a variety of paths to adulthood and one of these routes involves a slower development of their hearing.

This is especially true of the under sevens. If you think that your child may fall into this bracket, you should consult a doctor. It may be the result either of a hearing impairment of a disease.

Hearing aids have come a very long way from the days of cupping one’s hands behind one’s ears or using a hearing trumpet. They have even come a very long way from the huge battery listening aids of the twenties and thirties.

Nowadays, you have the choice of analogue or digital hearing aids. Analogue devices are very good, but going digital is the same as making the transition from vinyl records to CD’s.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with hearing aids reviews. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at Digital Hearing Aids Prices.

The Best Way To Groom And Brush Your Dog

All dogs need some form of grooming, there is no question about that. Even smooth chihuahuas should be wiped with a moist chamois leather to get rid of loose skin and dirt. However, one of the main reasons for grooming your dog frequently is so that you can check him for skin problems like allergic reactions to flea or tick bites. Another reason is bonding. In a pack situation, dogs groom other dogs and are themselves groomed every day and dogs enjoy it.

Therefore, you ought to groom or brush your dog at least every week and take him to a dog parlour every three, four or six months depending on how fast his hair or fur grows and whether you can afford it or not. Having said that, you will find grooming easier if your dog’s coat is the right length, because it will not tangle so readily.

You should wash your dog every month or so and groom him at at a minimum of once week. This will ensure that your dog becomes accustomed to being bathed and handled. If this is done from the puppy age, most dogs will not only accept it, but they will come to enjoy it, although there will always be those dogs that bolt for it as soon as they see a hose and a bowl. They get to know what to look out for. If you talk to him all the time, reassuring him and occasionally giving a doggie treat, he should soon come to accept the unavoidable – that he is going to be bathed and groomed.

In fact, most dogs enjoy the grooming, although many only tolerate the bathing. Anyway, bathing and grooming on a regular basis will keep the job as simple as it can be. Once your dog is no longer a puppy, say after six months or so, you could take him to a professional groomer in a so-called ‘Poodle Parlour’. By that time, he should be getting used to the routine and he will accept the treatment from strangers more willingly too.

You could look for professional groomers in advertisements in the pet store or the vet’s or simply ask your friends and neighbours for recommendations. Finding a groomer should not be problem, but you may have to try a couple before you uncover one whose manner of grooming you like or who is flexible enough to suit your lifestyle.

When you drop your dog off at the Poodle Parlour, ask when it will be ready to be collected up. Turn up fifteen minutes early and you might be lucky enough to witness first hand how your dog is being treated and how your dog is getting on with the groomer. This is invaluable information, because it will help you make up your mind whether the groomer is getting on with your dog or not.

If the groomer is doing a good job, but your dog is nervous, you can help put him at ease. If the groomer is being a bit too rough, then you will know whether to change Poodle Parlours or just have that groomer barred from taking care of your dog.

How To Learn Healthy Anger Management Techniques

When wanting to treat or deal with anger management issues, there are many tactics. Each of them is intended to help people who are quick-tempered and often have fits of rage. Anger, although a healthy and normal response to upsetting situations, can be intense to the point of violence.

When a person experiences regular episodes of angry or reckless behaviour, there is a problem and one that needs to be dealt with. Anger management strategies are designed to help an individual return to a healthy, normal existence.

Taking a time-out is considered a healthy anger management strategy. Distancing oneself from a situation or person that makes a person angry is practicing time-out. This anger management strategy might simply take a ride in the car or a walk in the woods.

Practicing sports or working out will help an individual to use up some of their surplus energy without involving others. Some other tips for a break are reading, listening to music or sitting alone in silence. All of these activities are healthy anger management tactics.

Another example of a healthy anger management strategy is admitting to the anger. Although the anger is usually brought on by an annoying situation or a confrontation with another individual, the anger actually belongs to the troubled person. Only the person who’s experiencing the anger issues can control their outbursts.

Only the person with the anger problems can uncover anger management strategies to cope with their feelings in a sensible way. When an individual becomes angry or upset they ought to try to uncover the reasons for their anger whether it is hurt, fear, frustration, sadness, confusion , jealousy or whatever seems to bring respite for the rage.

Another healthy anger management tactic is to look back on those situations that upset an individual and try to find ways to make alterations. Learning the reason for the anger may help the individual to avoid those situations. Not only might the person learn to avoid these incidents but they might also choose to adopt what they’ve learned and attempt to deal with the situation without bursting into a frenzy.

A further suggestion regarding healthy management strategies is to confront the situation or person. Talk to the person or people involved, calmly of course, to try to determine the root of the issue. The angry person might actually discover that the whole thing was a misunderstanding. The individual might also try asking the person or people in the problem to think about their behaviour and perhaps even change it.

It may be a surprise to some sufferers what people would be willing to do to assist the person who is trying to deal with their issues with anger. Hopefully, everything will work out for the best. If not there has to be room for compromise. Sometimes a person must simply accept the situations and people they cannot change and either accept it or walk away.

Learning healthy anger management strategies should be considered by those with anger problems. There are lots of books published about anger and anger management. There is also a wealth of information available on the Internet for those who are attempting to deal with their anger by learning healthy anger management strategies.

How To Keep Mosquitoes Off Your Patio

Everyone with a lovely garden, patio or deck will surely enjoy sitting outside on a warm summer’s day or evening. But if there is one thing that can blight it for you, it is mosquitoes. Sometimes, it only takes one of two persistent mosquitoes to make your blood boil. Mosquitoes are a pest for sure, but they can also be a health hazard, spreading dengue fever and malaria and several other really horrible diseases. So how do you go about keeping mosquitoes out of your garden?

Maybe you cannot realistically hope to keep mosquitoes out of your garden completely, but there are some things you can do to deter them and keep their numbers down. Stopping them breeding in your garden is the first step to take. Mosquitoes do not have a long flying range, many of the mosquitoes that bother you in your garden will have been born inyour garden.

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in still water, so make sure that there is none in your garden. They will lay eggs in water vats, dogs’ bowls, water that has collected in old tyres, bottles and tins and your rubbish bins, so make sure that no water can gather anywhere. Blocked gutters are another breeding site. If you have a water feature, put fish in it to eat the larvae.

Mosquitoes hate the smell of lemon, so you could grow citronella plants, lemon thyme, lemon grass and even a lemon tree, if the climate is right. Otherwise you could burn citronella scented candles or oil in the vicinity They not only keep the mosquitoes away, but the smell is very fresh and envigourating.

If they are still bothering you, you may have to resort to mosquito repellent. You could drench your clothing with permethrin, like the army does for jungle combat or just smeer a deet-based brand on your skin. There are also a lot of natural mosquito repellents too, such as lemon oil, citronella and eucalyptus oil.

Garlic is supposed to repel mosquitoes, so you could try growing garlic close at hand. It is also meant to repel ticks and has demonstrated to discourage greenfly (aphids) from roses. What could be better, particularly if you like garlic as well?

You could hang up one or two of those lamps that attract insects to them and them vapoourize them with a high voltage shock. These electric bug killers are particularly good for killing mosquitoes and house flies, which can also be a nuisance when you are sitting outside.

They are reasonably priced and will last for years. They give off a pleasing glow and some claim to be able to de-infest areas of a quarter, a half and even a full acre of terrain of all flying insects by the use of the ultraviolet light and pheromones.

By using some or all of the above methods of keeping mosquitoes out of your garden, you should be able to enjoy your drink, a chat or a snooze in complete peace and freedom from flies and mosquitoes.

How To Succeed At Forex Day Trading

The Forex trading market is the largest market in the world by far. In fact it is bigger than all the stock exchanges in the world combined. Trading goes on day and night seven days a week and there are millions of individuals, companies and even governments using the Forex to make money every minute. However, do not let this trick you into thinking that trading Forex is easy money, because it is not.

Most Forex traders trade on a long term basis, but others trade much more frequently, buying and selling the same position within 24-72 hours. These traders are called ‘day traders’. In order to trade Forex profitably you will have to learn the ropes.

One of the best methods of doing this is to open a practice Forex trading account. Most of the online Forex trading companies offer a practice account and the best ones offer free accounts and free practice accounts too. Again, the best Forex trading companies offer free technical and fundamental analysis along with access to all historical financial data and current financial information.

If you have never traded Forex before, you will almost certainly lose money, unless you are fortunate, but you do not want to be relying on luck when you use your own, real money. You will want to be relying on ability and information, although hoping for a bit of luck too is not unusual.

At the same time as you are learning to use all the financial and analytical tools at your disposal, you should try to develop a sense of detachment from your trades. Never become emotionally involved with one of your trades. It sounds daft, but people do become attached to a trade and lose touch with reality. This is a big mistake and one that professionals do not make.

So, when the statistics tells you to sell, just sell, do not attempt to fool yourself into thinking that everything will be all right next week. This may work for long term trading, but it does not work for day trading, it ties up too much of your capital. When you have developed a system that you think you can trust, say, one that uses the results from a combination of charts, you should stick to it unerringly. This is the only way that you can tell if your scheme works. This is why you need detachment from your trades.

Fear and greed are treacherous emotions, but they play a big part in the strategies, or lack of them, of many day traders. People are frightened of losing money, so if their choice goes down, they hang on praying that it will rise again. This is a dangerous game. You could lose a lot more than if you had got out in the first place.

Likewise, if your judgment was correct and the currency rises as you forecasted, get out when it reaches your goal, do not hang on in there hoping to make more. Greed will get the better of you in the end, if you do. Following a rapid rise, there is often a correction in the price. ‘Correction’ is a euphemism for ‘fall’ and you will be kicking yourself for not selling when you knew you should have.

So beware greed and fear, do not become emotional and stick to your system. However, if your system does not work, even when you follow it to the letter, then change it and test it again. This is the only way that you will be able to progress and make some decent money at Forex trading.
